Information is collected every 10 years. Initially it was just a population count, but modern census returns, are issued and analysed by the Office of National Statistics and provide far more information that is used to plan services for the future.
The census is regularly used by historians and genealogists, but to protect the confidentiality of people still living, the census data is only made public after 100 years (i.e. the 1911 census should be available in 2011). |
